I'm very pleased with how it turned out. I've been wearing it a LOT and the yarn is holding up amazingly. This is by far the warmest cardigan I own.

The yarn is HF Blue Faced DK and pattern is Na Craga by Alice Starmore, but modified heavily. I made the whole thing in the round, with a steek for the front and saddle shoulder shaping (Elizabeth Zimermann's books). I've made the smallest size and it still looks a bit big. But very cozy.

I'm pleased, can you tell?

2011 was an amazing year for me and I want to take this opportunity to thank all our customers for their support throughout the year. In January, I hired two friends Laura and Máire to help me with the growing business and work on an expansion plan. On December the 3^rd, we had our studio launch party. While sharing our amazing studio with friends, family and fans was fun in itself, for myself, Máire and Laura, it was the culmination of almost 12 months of work, ranging from visiting potential sites, bank and accountant meetings and finally, lots and lots of painting!

We moved out of my kitchen at the end of October and has made a huge difference, in terms of the volume of yarn we can make and in that I can now switch off when I get back from work, rather than ‘just doing a bit more’, all night at times!

We have already started taking on new retail customers, which we were having to turn down this time last year, and we should soon be able to start taking new custom orders which we had to suspend during the move.

As a present to start the year, we commissioned a super cute interchangeable needle case for one lucky commenter on this post. My friend Mirka made this lovely case using a HF dyed silk fabric and all you have to do to win it is to tell us what you would like to see from Hedgehog Fibres this year. Is there a colour you think we are missing? A base we NEED to stock!? Something we should be doing that we’re not?

Studio tour

This is how we started, a bare concrete unit, just a shell. No bathroom, no electricity.

And here it is now. Bright and white. That's a living birch tree in the corner. We have a custom made wall-mounted wooden drying rack. It's great.

At the back is the dye-kitchen. It'll be eventually extended a bit more. Towards the left we have a bath tub mounted waist high. I use it to soak the yarn and it's so much more comfortable than a regular tub, no more bending down.

Most of the furniture is from Ikea, with a few trinkets and second-hand finds. I love the four lightbulbs, dropped from the tall ceiling. Quite dramatic.

A staircase up, to the office area. Another tree, we were told this one is dead and got it for free. If it doesn't wake up in the spring, we'll spray-paint it. Gold :)

Upstairs, we are still missing the sofa, which should have been delivered last week, but there's still no sign of it.
It's a bit bare, but we are adding stuff constantly.

This Saturday we had the official opening, here are a few pics from the night. Kristin was the event organizer and she did a marvelous job. I just wanted balloons. Yes, those are 2 stuffed birds, it's a vintage find, I queued for 2 hours at a charity shop to get them.

We had food and drinks and it was lovely.

I think we did a good job decorating the space.

Winter is here

Doggies are sorted. Two new jumpers. I think I have perfected the construction. Bottom up, no swatching necessary. The neck short-rows gave me a bit of a headache (I've knitted a huge heel instead of a neck at first). But it turns out quite radical decreasing down the middle of the front-neck solved the problem.

Lola's jumper is handspun HF Corriedale, quite thickly spun. I had 190g of fibre and spinning got done in just a few hours. The knitting itself, mere 4 hours, done in two evenings. Yay for bulky!

Floyd's jumper is Donegal tweed, pretty and manly for my boy.
It is little bit looser than I wanted it to, but I'm sure he'll felt and shrink it in no time.

(Floyd's been rolling on a white wool rug that sheds. But isn't it nice? Like a giant stockinette fabric!)

Steek

Crochet steek, the way to go, me thinks.
Be sure to use wool, not some funny blends. Here I have Blue faced DK and the brown contrast steek yarn is Shetland. Please don't use bamboo or similar slippery stuff.

So, you crochet a simple chain, up and down around the center steek stitch, where the cardigan opening ought to be. There's a pretty neat explanation here. Really quite simple and it holds together amazingly well, no unravelling whatsoever.

My dad asked whether I was knitting a zipper... it does sort of look like a zipper, doesn't it.

And then cut the ladder between the two halves of a stitch.

Now pick up for the borders.

I have decided to do ribbing as my border. To match to cuffs and lower edge. It'll be interesting to incorporate buttonholes into the ribbing, but I'm sure it'll turn out fine.

I did a pretty deep steek, 12 stitches (in fact, I did an uneven steek, one side has 5.5 and the other 6.5 stitches, as it worked better with the pattern as I just left out one 12 st. cable in the center)
Now, just the borders to do, yay!

It's a mammoth task, I'm knitting Na Craga. Sleeves done. I'm modifying it into a cardigan and completely in the round. There will be a steek. Stay tuned.
But be patient, I am an extremely slow cable knitter...

On a side note, the YARN! I've always liked HF Blue Faced DK but I have a completely new appreciation. It must be one of the best for cable work. Cushy and soft with marvelous stitch definition. And the yardage is great. I've done sleeves and ribbing for the body and it's just 1 and 2/3 skeins.

Yesterday I have decided to take a break from Na Craga, so I started a hat (cabled again, don't know what's wrong with me). It's this one. It's kind of huge though, like a rasta hat and I ran out of yarn since I only had one skein of the beautiful Pheasant Aran Merino yarn. I have to dye more. I can live with the dyelot difference :) I totally thought one skein is enough for a hat. Well it is, for most hats I guess.

Doggie cushion

When I got Floyd, I had a big problem with him standing or sitting on the kitchen table while I was gone. Turns out, he just wanted to look out of the window.

I got this sidetable second-hand, painted it white and crocheted a sweet little cushion cover. The sewing part was kindly done by Mirka of mirkadesigns.
Pattern is from a vintage crochet magazine and yarn is cotton by Pierrot yarns.

I makes a pretty little bench and the doggies love it.

I am so excited about this! I've been sitting on this 'secret' project for a while and now I can finally share. Laura Eliason has launched a fantastic collection of hand-dyed silk scarves, a collaboration with Hedgehog Fibres.

They are so ethereal, beautiful, soft and delicate.
I wear one very proudly and I get so many compliments, even from strangers.

All colours are one-of-a-kind, spectacular kaleidoscopes of colour. The fabrics Laura has chosen are stunning - there are two types, one sheer and one opaque.

I love the fact that these aren't skimpy little things. You can wrap yourself in abundance of fabric and colour. Without having bulk around your neck.

I am so mesmerized. Still.

blogger has been really wonky for me the last two days!
Anyways, here's the rest of my creations for the month of June. A crochet stone. I had to re-cover one of my older stones as the dogs have eaten it. I like this one better than the old one now.

The yarn is HF silk lace, colourway unknown. I had this in the stash for ages, so I'm keeping up with my stash-busting theme...
I often get asked how do I come up with patterns for the stones. I've recently purchased around 25 issues of vintage 'Decorative Crochet' magazine and boy, those are great for doilies! I got the whole lot on ebay quite cheaply.
It makes a pretty pretty doorstop. Very useful, as the door won't stay open and often traps one of the dogs. If Lola is trapped in the bedroom she whines loudly, but on one occasion we thought Floyd was lost forever and we stayed up until 5am waiting for him to 'come back' and when we've given up and went to bed I found Floyd sitting, quietly trapped, in the bedroom.

and the ultimate stash-busting project is this one. I have bought this expensive, decadent, beautiful yarn ages ago and it took me only a year to finish this raglan tunic. It is really simple, no shaping, rolled edges, in the round, miles of stockinette. The pattern is Elizabeth Zimmermann Seamless raglan, one of my favourites.

and it is so fine, it snags on everything!

Lastly, my current crochet project is a cushion cover. I now have 4 squares and 4 to go. The pattern is again from vintage issue of Decorative Crochet magazine and yarn is Pierrot yarns Sawayaka cotton. Very nice, non-splitty cotton. Lovely selection of colours too. This one that I choose is actually very faint, beige-green.

Long time no see! June was a stash-busting month and I have lots to show to you. I've managed to knit up 2 pairs of socks. Plain one with Schoppel Wolle Admiral yarn. I really like it, as it looks like handspun.
I think I need larger sock blockers, these are size 36 and are way too small...

and then this pair from Knitting Vintage Socks book, Gentleman's socks with lozenge pattern. I took out 2 pattern repeats to make the man's sock fit me. The yarn is Lang yarns Jawoll, that is quite wooly, some may say a bit itchy, but each ball contains a little spool of matching reinforcement nylon thread for the heels and toes. How neat! So I am expecting these to last forever :)

Plus, I happen to have quite a few colours of this yarn, so I'll have to make more socks with it.

The internet conection is getting a bit weird, so I guess I'll divide everything into 2 posts.

I have my hands full, we had puppies recently, well miss Lola did... pics
I've managed to squeeze in a bit of crochet and a bit of spinning. These are silk hankies, I offer them in the shop, but boy, they go fast!

The hankies were bit challenging at first, I haven't worked with anything with such a looong staple. I imagine they u be a delight to spin on a drop spindle. You can go thin very easily and the resulting yarn is really strong, with a lovely sheen, but bouncier than your mill-spun silk, which I prefer. The yarn got much more even towards the end of the bobbin.
I spun the scruffy top and bottom layers of the stacks that I sold at the shop, I tried to do a bit of a gradient, but I wound it into a ball, and I don't think that has happened.

Then I made a small pincushion,. I want to make one for a friend, so this is a prototype, I stuffed it with bits of yarn (yes, I squirrel away bits of yarn, they come in handy). Uneven picots, puffs too flat, dislike.

More new crochet stones too, with a thicker thread.

I got really lazy with the backs... and I ran out of stones.

(I took a ceramics class, I made the doily bowl :))

Merino/silk/flax by HF spun as lace singles. The top was real fun to spin, just enough of a challenge. It turned out way more even than I had hoped for. It will make something lacy (and probably a covered stone too)
Blue Faced Leicester, also HF. 2ply sport weight and about 250g in total. I've added sparkly angelina fibre as I was spinning the singles. The sparkle is very subtle and impossible to photograph.

Obviously I had to try all of the new fibres from the shop, this is Wensleydale, lace singles. The unspun braid looks so tiny, but it is so dense and once you start drafting it fluffs up and it is such a pleasure to spin. I happen to like fuzzy yarns, so this right up my alley.

Wensleydale has a nice long staple, I found it really easy to spin. It doesn't have the softest hand though, definitely not as soft as my other fibre types, but it is so different from your everyday merino. Lustrous and fuzzy and it drafts like a dream. I think it will wear well too.

On other news, miss Lola is pregnant, she's sporting quite a belly now. We weren't sure if she really was knocked up for whole first half of the pregnancy, it just didn't show. Puppies were planned :) one is spoken for. I hope we'll be able to find families for all of the little ones. She has around 2 weeks to go, so exciting!

very basic, using Hedgehog Fibres sock yarn in two past club colourways - Mozambique and Kelp. I only had a bit of each colour, therefore I have a mismatched pair. I kinda like them this way.

Winter Thaw shawl revisited

After almost a year, this shawl is done and dusted ! I'll be putting together a pattern to go to test-knitters (thanks to everybody who offered to test knit!) and then I'll release the pattern, for free.

This version is knitted using my Kidsilk lace in Ink colourway and it uses about 1 and 1/3 skeins - and it is big!

I've modified the original shawl, I added more elaborate edging, I think it suits the shawl much better. It is also really interesting to knit. The large hole is formed by 5 yarn overs.

The fabric is light, airy and delicate. I love how the Kidsilk holds blocking - I got rained on wearing this shawl and it still looks perfect.

The yarn will be featured in March-April-May lace club, get your subscription while you can! (there will be enough to knit the full sized shawl - 2 skeins)

Quilt!

Sorry for the picture overload! I am in love with this quilt (mostly thanks to Chris, who did the quilting for me on her longarm machine). It is quite big - I am standing behind it, arms outstretched, holding the quilt up.

Doggies like it too. We got a new puppy few days ago (the one on the right, but I'm sure you all know which one is Lola...) He's about 7 months, rescue dog from a local animal shelter and we're calling him Floyd.

I have a thing for these scruffy terrier mixed breeds. They make wonderful companions.
Floyd needs training though, today he stole a hunk of cheese from the table. Unacceptable.

The back of the quilt is an old sheet.

I am mesmerized by the floral stitching vs. geometrical pattern.

Have to make another one some day!

Sprouting

The socks are done and dusted! Almost finished with the pattern too, hopefully I'll release it over the weekend.I've named the socks Sprouting, as cables always remind me of sprouts for some reason. Organically growing from the ribbing.

The cables make the fabric thick and cushy and they look intricate without having to cable excessively (I hate that, too much fiddling around with a cable needle makes the progress slow and I quickly lose interest)

All in all, this is a great quick little project and the socks make me feel smug everytime I look at them, the perfect pair in my opinion :)

I'm half way through the second sock of my design.

I'd like to release it as a free pattern once finished. It is a simple, straightforward cabled desing, very stretchy.

The yarn I'm using is Hedgehog fibres sock yarn in Opalite colourway. It's cushy and soft, yet it has good stitch definition. Perfect.

Don't we all need a pair?
Bit of handspun yarn makes two rectangles that are sewn together on the side (leave a bit out for the thumb). Easy and quick. Mine are garter stitch, since they are not in the round and I'm not too fond of purling.

Mittens

I'm so happy with these! It is being useasonably cold this year and these are extremely warm and fit well.

I did a mash up of few different charts from this book, which is well worth buing if you are into latvian mittens. The amount of charts and patterns is incredible and techniques (like the latvian braid, different cast-ons) are explained really well.

The yarn is traditional colourwork shetland yarn by Jamieson&Smith. It is not the softest but on the upside it will probably wear well. I'd like to try my new Blue Faced DK yarn for another pair.

Winter thaw shawl

The shawl has been finished for couple of months now.

The yarn is Hedgehog fibres Merino/silk lace, colourway Winter thaw, I believe I used less than one skein. I really like the coulor and the yarn has a great drape. Brooch is vintage.

It is my design and I have lost all my construction notes. So it went into hiding for a couple of months.

I'm trying to re-do it, many of you have asked for the pattern (I'd release it for free). Also the plan is to do an alternative edging, as this one curls a little. Not badly, just a bit.

The current Winter thaw shawl is being made with the new Kidsilk lace yarn, I'll show you next time.

Pi shawl blanket

This has been finished for ages...

I followed Elizabeth Zimmermann's instructions from Knitting workshop, it is stockinette with *yo, k2tog* every six rows, which camouflages the (very few) increase rounds. I used gull stitch border as the book suggests and simple but pretty garter stitch edging.

This is my most favourite and most used item I've ever knitted despite the fact that it is a circular blanket... that idea seemed most odd to me, but since the diameter is over 220 cm, it works.

The yarn is the most basic stuff you can get in Ireland. Aran weight tweed, probably spun by Donegal woolen mills. I have bought mine unlabeled... not the softest stuff.

I ran out of yarn two times, so it also has a bit of blue Noro, some weird dark blue yarn from stash and then tweedy black yarn, that I forgot what brand it was.

Yup, Lola thinks it's hers. She kept sitting on it during the photoshoot.

my first one! I've managed to finish the patchwork top and it only took about a year

it was sent to a talented lady who does custom quilting, since it turns out that a large quilt (180x140cm) doesn't want to be quilted on a regular domestic machine. I'm not the most patient person and after few hours of struggling to maneuvre the whole thing through my machine, I gave up, took out whatever wonky stitching I had done and sent it off to the n ice lady

she'll also bind the whole quilt together, so excited! I'd probably mess it up anyways

My most recent handspun is Hedgehog fibres superwash merino. I forgot to take a picture of the unspun fibre, but I took two different braids, spun each onto it's own bobbin and then plied together.

And now miss Lola has a jumper for winter!

She's quite a model, when I have a camera in my hands, she sits and poses...

I used some random black DK weight for the collar and cuffs, just to make it look a bit smarter, not too homemade, even thought it is hand-spun hand-knitted DOG jumper for the love of god and I don't want to look like a hippie craftslady who knits jumpers for dogs even though I so am and so do

In my book, the black collar and cuffs make it look totally ok... that's how weird I am

I'd like to think that Lola likes it. Oh and this an innocent play bite. Her teeth are just far to big for her body.

I've finally organized my knitting needles and notions... I am missing good few needle tips and have way too many spare cables for the interchangeables, how's that?

I have this lovely needle roll by MirkaDesign and she has one really pretty one left in her shop, I think she also does custom orders and has many fabrics to choose from.

I really love mine, it is fairly big, but sturdy and everything fits into this one needle roll. Fixed circulars (well, I have more, but these are my favourite), Knitpicks sets (you can fit three, there's one more row on the top) double pointed needles - mine are wooden, by Dyak craft. Also cable needles, stitch holders and needle gauge. I like these stitch holders that look like a giant safety pin, and I'd love to get a prettier needle gauge, preferably out metal, I like the vintage ones, but don't know where to get one.

The top lefthand large orange pocket won't fit fixed circulars, but it's great for these Knitpicks thingies for the interchangeable cables.

And there are also three large pockets accesible from the top. One hides cables themselves - and I have many of those.

Other one has more double pointed needles in this case Knitpicks steel ones. The short kind, only 4'' which are supposedly for socks, but they poke me right into the palm of my hand, so I don't like those too much.

I've had this yarn in my stash for ages, it's Rowan Purelife Revive, colour Pumice.

It's recycled silk, cotton and viscose. I like the speckled look, but it looks a bit dirty or something... Quite unsure what to make with it.

I held the yarn double for the swatch. It is also wee bit smelly, like silk smelly, not very unpleasant but the smell persists even after a wash.

And I have a ton of it, a sweater worth.

spinning thick

I am under the spell of thick spinning. It's so fast! I spun these from Hedgehog fibres superwash merino top leftovers, that were too ugly to put in the shop, but still very nice to work with.
Both yarns are two ply, aran weigh, soft and supple. I am very happy with the quality of the fibre.

It is a little improvised baby blanked, knitted in a round. I've used crochet hook cast on and kept increasing on four points to make a square. I used a simple generic lace pattern and then seed stitch edging.

The yarn is Hedgehog fibres sock yarn, two colours of last instalment of the sock club - Mozambique and Sand storm. I held the yarn double and created a gradient from one colour to another.

The blanket is over a meter square .

Current knitting is a jumper for me. I've had the yarn for ages, it is a brushed cashmere/silk and it is just beautiful, and soft. I can't think of a name right now.

It is a lovely mouse gray colour. I started knitting the sleeves first and I have one and a half a sleeve done and I still haven't finished the first 25g ball. It's looking like it's going to be 75g jumper!

It has been a buse few weeks. We have moved to a new house, we've had friends over for a week, we've gotten hens. The new house is fab, I now have a studio space for my work and also more convenient storage room (I don't have to walk upstairs anymore, yay!).
The hens started laying tiny eggs about a week ago, but I hope they will get bigger as the hens get a bit older.

Lola is having a blast with them, altough at first she was scared to death. They are in fact as big as she is!

They have names too - Noodle, Trousers and Turbina. They are not scared, can be picked up and petted too. Our friends kids just love them.

Chickens are much less work than I expected! They just need water some food and once in a while a little walk around the garden. And they lay eggs. Awesome :)

This was a Christmas gift for a friend of mine. I got a chance to photograph it just now
the pattern is from The knitted odd-bodd bunch by Donna Wilson, but I modified it to make it completely in one piece, the pattern suggests to knit it flat and seam together.

She is such a cutie, named after my friend's sausage dog, that sadly died few years ago. She's been wanting a another sausage dog ever since.

Winter thaw shawl

I'm working on a triangular shawl, using my silk/merino lace in Winter thaw colourway. It is my design and the name is a work in progress :) I'm really happy with the colour, it will match all my mostly gray clothes but it's not completely neutral. Also I don't think I own anything green, so it will be a nice change...

I tried part blocking it, so the stitches show better. Fairly tricky operation!

The stitch patterns I chose are very organic - it reminds me of leaves and the next section, which is not shown in these pics looks sort of like feathers. I'm still unsure about the edging though.

The patter should be avilable soon and it will be free.

I have two skeins, each around 100g. It's funny how the first skein looks mauve and brown and the second skein is blue-ish... even though the singles look green and purple.

Here are the pictures of the pink fibre, spun into worsted/aran weight 2 ply yarn. At the end I had more singles on one bobbin, so I mixed in a bit of leftover shetland/merino single.

These lovelies just arrived, they are by yarnwench, in Mourning Dove and Capricorn. I also got a mixed merino bag, different bits of hand dyed merino. So beautiful and very 'me' colours. Thank you Lynn!

This is a shetland/merino blend, I had some shetland lying around, so I carder it with pinkish hand-dyed merino on my carder. I like the tweed look, but shetland is wee bit scratchy.

This is the merino from this post - the one at the very end. I'm suprised how good the it looks, I thought that the colours were way to muddy but I quite like the yarn!

Spinning this took forever, buy it's way worth it. I have around 700 - 800m lace from one braid of Hedgehog fibres silk/merino fibre and it's dreamy. So shiny and soft and lovely, I also love the colour, subtle, just to my liking.

I finished the jumper as you could see from my previous post. I just added button, which I absolutely adore, such a great find. It's a wooden stick made from metal!

Also I now have these. They are Regia sock yarn, Kaffe Fasset collection in Celebration, Landscape line. And they match! I'm verry happy with them. I had lots of leftover yarn too, like half a ball.
I used 'afterthought heel' technique, I basically made a sock without a heel and I added the heel after the sock was finished. I really like this technique, it's fool-proof no holes heel and it also looks pretty. It also makes self striping yarns look like a V on the heel as you can see in the last picture, lovely little detail.

These are my most colourful project so far.

So winter is in full swing... fingers are cold, mittens are needed. It is Maimu's mittens pattern from Folk knitting in Estonia by Nancy Bush which I've modified by using different cuff and simpler thumb. I only have this lonely unfinished mitten so far, as I've discovered strong dislike towards stranded patterns and my inability to knit with both hands...

But fingers are still cold and as these might not get finished this winter or at all, I bought (oh the horror!) two pairs of gloves from H&M...

But I really like the yarn - my Cashmere/merino in Copper penny + undyed.

Also I started a jumper last Sunday and voila, I already have the body and one sleeve done. The yarn is really really nice - Jo Sharp Silkroad aran tweed, colour Bridle. It is quite expensive, but it has wonderful feel to it - it's so soft! And I've washed the swatch and it gets softer, yay!

Here's the swatch - I opted for garter stitch edging, I think it adds to the rustic look of the yarn.

If everything works out as it should it'll have shawl collar and large hood. That is if the neck opening will be wide enough and if I won't run out of yarn, I only have 500g in total and this jumper is oversized. Here is the start of my steek:

See? Hard to tell how big will the neck opening become after it'll be cut...

I'm also still working on my crochet blanket. I abandoned the original idea of crocheting with 3.5mm hook in scallop pattern, it has evolved into All Scraps That Match Blanket (I have a lot of gray and similar...) on a large hook. So far I have 130x100cm piece, I'm getting there.

I'm totally in love with the yarn, it's so soft and I still can't get over the colour, perfect for me. Subdued, but with a bit of life to it (this is about as much colour as I can wear, my clothes are strictly black, gray, white, taupe and blue only as jeans, beige very occasionaly...I'm hopeless.)

Such a neat little thing it is, perfect for autumn layering.

Sewn steek

First, I marked the centre stitch with fabric marker that is water soluble (click image to see it bigger)

Then I started machine stitching just half a stitch from the marked line. Sewing machine is set to loose tension and short stitch. You can do a crocheted steek, but I wasn't using particulary 'grabby' yarn and I was afraid that everything would become undone, so I went for a safe option.

I sewed down both sides of the line, the stitching is almost invisible from the right side

but it can be clearly seen on the purl side. (I have a wonky machine so I have few extra loops of sewing thread there...)

So, that's done, onto cutting... Cut precisely between the two 'halves' of a marked stitch.

The dreaded first cut, but aaahh it's not unraveling.

and here we go, steek done! It wasn't half as bad as I've expected.

Then I went ahead and started picking up stitches for the neck border.

new project on the needles! It will be a vest/short sleeved cardigan. I can’t get over the colour, I’m absolutely mesmerized by the ever changing pearlescent hues.

I’m using my silk/merino singles yarn. I’m making size S and the whole thing is made out of little over 3 skeins of yarn. It’s a quick knit too, on 5mm needles the fabric grows rapidly.

I’m trying to keep it simple, so it has stockinete body with garter stitch trims, the only ‘fancy’ touch is an i-cord bind of, which gives it nice finish.

I’ll have pics of the finished item soon, I hope I’ll finish today… Maybe I’ll release a pattern? Will see how it goes…

Jumper for Amelie

So Amelie got her jumper today. I did a classic Elizabeth Zimmermann seamless raglan (oh, how much I love her patterns) The only modification I did is that I started the sleeves on more stitches, since it's for a baby and I've thrown in few stripes. It still has pretty much adult proportions... I used Pure cashmere yarn (Hedgehog) held double in Malice colourway.

It turned out pretty big! Perhaps for next winter...
The writing on the hem was tricky. I tried carrying the darker colour yarn on the back of the hem by the means of 'trapping' which is a technique for doing intarsia on a piece of circular kniting - Meg Swansen explained it on one of the dvds they did with EZ (I think it was Knitting Glossary). Basically you carry both yarns at the same time, all the time. But the dark colour yarn was peeking through to the right side and it looked weird, so in the end I cut it on every row and had to weave in a lot of ends. But it looks neater.

So this jumper is for next year therefore I'll have to make another one (or two) for this year, one that is slightly smaller... Because Amelie is being such a good girl, she deserves to be wrapped in wooly goodness!

This is my current spinning. Silk/merino top, being spun very fine for thin 2ply lace yarn. Can't wait for the finished yarn!

Just started an itty bitty little jumper for my (almost) niece that was born 2 days ago. It's not your typical 'baby' colour, so I hope it will work out nicely and keep her warm in the winter.

The yarn is my Pure cashmere lace held double, in Malice colourway.The bag is made from Nani iro fabric, it doesn't show, but it's really crooked and wonky and the lining is too short (dunno how that hapened, really!). But I feel very smug, because I've put a zipper into something, yay! ...Yeah my sewing sucks, but I'm not giving up...

Ha! Wrinkly and puckered, because it just came out of the washing machine with crooked edges because I can't sew a straight line to save my life. (Laura, please do not laugh :))

I did quite well regarding cutting out the squares.

Also sewing the squares together was not too bad.

My finishing sucks, just look at the wonky edges!But Lola doesn't mind and seems to be quite interested in my camera:)

I'm getting there. This is a cardigan that I started a while back. I now have probably one third done. I've managed to set up the steek. The cardigan is knit in the round and will be cut open later on. I'm also thinking raglan sleeves. I'm not sure how the steek will work out, as I've never done anything like this before.

I adore the colour. It's my cashmere/merino in Hurricane colourway. The gauge is quite loose, as I want flowy drapey garment. 3.5mm needles and the yarn is fingering weight.

I've also started a new project - a crochet (!) blanket. It is 130cm wide and I'm using 3.5mm hook... it looks like a project that will either take 2 years to complete or it will never be finished... it is a slow process. I'm using undyed cashmere/merino that has a beautiful off white colour.

with a crochet project on the go, I of course neede a set of crochet hooks, right? and because I couldn't decide, I bought two - Boye and unknown but very beautiful bamboo handle set from ebay.

I've made the large size, on 4mm needles. It blocked out huge - the longest side is over 2m. But it's very light and airy. I've used 2.5 skeins - 125g of yarn, approx. 1000m.

The only thing I've changed is the top edging. I couldn't stand the thought of knitting the edging on sideways as pattern suggested, si I just picked up stitches from the provisional cast on and knitted up about 6 rows, with some YO, k2tog thrown in and then I did crochet cast off. (which got me thinking about crochet but about that later). Oh and the shawl is patterned on both right side and wrong side - no plain purl rows!

now the question is what to make next? I have one cardigan on the needles, but that doesn't count, since the needles are 3mm and the yarn thin. More lace? Baby stuff? (I'll be an aunt soon!) Hmmm....

50%merino/50%silk from A Verb For Keeping Warm in Kerala colourway. I'm still thinking Artichaut for this one. But I'm not 100% sure as I was after something finer, so maybe Artichaut in my silk lace yarn... will see.

I'm still working on Casino shawl, and I'm well beyond 2/3 point, maybe I already have 3/4 done. It's coming out really pretty.

I purchased this lovely 50% silk, 50% merino combed top quite a long time ago at A Verb for keeping warm. The colour is beautiful and almost solid, so I decided to spin it fine and make two ply lace. So far I've finished first 2 oz and have another 2 oz to go. I'm hoping to get enought yardage to make Artichaut. I'm getting a little addicted to patterns by Anne Hanson...

Casino shawl

Another one by the talented Anne of Knitspot. First best thing is the yarn - scrumptious and I love feeling it between my hands as I knit. I keep petting the knitted fabric, so lightweight yet so substantial. And oh, the colour!

Second best thing about this shawl is the construction. Starting at the long side you work your way towards the point. Can it get any better? I love the prospect of rows getting shorter and shorter. Also the edging is knitted simultaneously. Sweet!

Third best thing are the needles. Jenkins 4mm, 32 inch ebony circulars. Sharpest points I've seen so far and the smooth hard wood makes them not too sticky, not too slippery, just right for lace. Must get more of these babies...

It seems like summer has arrived! So I went for an elderflower hunt and made elderflower cordial yesterday, which to me is the essence of summer. Fragrant, tangy, full of summer.

Takze som konecne spravila bazovy sirup, mmm to je leto v pohari.

To make your own, you'll need approx. 10 large elderflower blossoms and 1kg sugar per liter of water, lemon juice/citric acid to taste. Boil the water, let cool to room temperature then add flowers, put them in the water and let stand for 24 hours (you might need a bit of weight, like a plate to keep the flowers submerged). Strain the liquid through fine sieve lined with muslin, then add sugar and let to dissolve. You can speed up the process by heating the liquid a bit. Add lemon juice or citric acid to taste. I like mine quite tangy. The cordial won't keep forever, as there are no preservatives, but we usually drink it within a couple of weeks anyway :) I's essential not to wash the flowers because it's the pollen that gives the cordial it's distinctive flavour, so pick only clean flowers, not beside a busy road. Enjoy!

I was in dire need of quick project, so I started these simple ribbed socks, one already finished! Using my cashmere/merino yarn in a colourway that was supposed to be Smile politely, but ended up quite off, but still nice.

This was a difficult journey. But it is done and I'm happy I went though with it. I don't think I'll ever knit lace with douceur et soie or similar yarn (e.g. kidsilk haze) though.

No toto bolo. dlho to trvalo, vlnka strasna chlpata... uff. Ale som rada. ze som to nakoniec zvladla. Uz ale nebudem nikdy strikovat cipku s chlpatou vlnkou.

It is done... almost. The garter stitch ends flare out a bit too much and I have to weave the ends. The pattern is beautiful (Baby cable blanket by Alex Lawson) and simple enough to memorize, but the yarn, ugh. Doesn't hold blocking at all. (Note: Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK)

Hotovo... skoro. Akurat ze na koncoch je to nejake sirsie. Vzor je krasny (Baby cable blanket by Alex Lawson) a dost jednoduchy na zapamatanie. Ale ta vlnka, ble, priserna, vobec nedrzi tvar (Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK).

I should have casted on 10 - 15% less stitches for the border, just look at it... grrr.

Vacation part III - May celebrations

The traditions are still alive. This is a 'May tree', tall and straight, stripped of branches, the top is decorated with ribbons and such. The original tradition was that on the 1st of May a boy made 'May tree' for the girl he wanted to propose, but nowadays there's usually only one tree per village as a symbol of spring and love perhaps.
